1月30日午後、ワイキキのモアナ・サーフライダー・ホテル（Moana Surfrider Hotel）の5階ラナイ（バルコニー）の手すりが突然ビーチに落下したとのこと。
幸いなことにラナイには誰もおらず、階下でも重傷を負った人もいなかったが重大な問題としてとらえられている。
専門家の見立てでは、ラナイの前方の傾いた縁にかなり腐食した水平の鉄筋が見えたので、水が上のタイルを伝ってコンクリートに浸透しているのだと思うと来コメントしている。適切な保守と点検があれば回避できた可能性があると指摘したとのこと。現在は手すりの検査頻度を定めた法律や要件はないらしい。
この事態を受け、ホノルル市議会では手すりの点検要件について議論が始まる模様。
